ThinkForward operates in schools and colleges in London, Nottingham, Kent and the West Midlands in areas with some of the highest levels of intergenerational unemployment in the UK. We consciously focus on working with the most disengaged young people, as we know there are existing interventions for those who require less intensive support.
We know that contact with employers during school is vital to giving young people the necessary belief, awareness and motivation to gain employment once they leave education.
Alongside qualifications and experience we also know that employers are looking for candidates with a range of transferable technical and social skills. Without the help of programmes like ThinkForward too many young people are simply not ‘work-ready’ when they start looking for a job.
At ThinkForward we work with businesses to provide a range of activities that can help young people get ready for work placements now and ensure they are employable when they leave school or further education. It also gives volunteers a fantastic way to use their experience, while learning some new skills themselves.
Half day workshops offer young people a chance. Workshops can be tailored to the expertise of a firm but tend to focus on three main themes:
Quality work experience placements are an essential part of helping a young person prepare for the world of work. We are always looking for opportunities for young people to spend two days to two weeks working within an organisation. We provide full support before, during and after the placement to ensure the experience is valuable for all involved.
Business mentoring provides an opportunity for volunteers to make a longer term commitment to a young person as they approach their GCSEs.
Teams of employees meet regularly, either once or twice a month to mentor groups of young people in an office environment. Mentors work with the students to help build confidence and self belief and provide advice on anything from career aspiration to college applications.
